AS COLOUR X CHESTER HOLME

Chester Holme – @cjholme

A South London native, Illustrator and Artist

The focus of these designs is this sense of collaged and overlapping buildings & histories, which I think is quite a defining characteristic of the area – It was a real industrial hub full of victorian warehouses, factories and markets but the modern gentrification began after it was bombed during the second world war. After being rebuilt again as an industrial area it eventually became the centre of London's tech start-up and design industries.

"What I find really interesting about Shoreditch is that it's an area of London that doesn't hide all the eras of redevelopment, re-purposing and regeneration that it has been through"

This is a similar story to a lot of south and east London, but Shoreditch doesn't hide this evolution — it openly wears a sort of a patchwork of architecture that clearly tells the story of it's history. A red-brick victorian warehouse sits next to a glossy glass skyscraper; an ugly 60s tower block competes for space with an 18th century church; at one end of a street is a row of prim edwardian townhouses and at the other is a jumble of market stalls and former factory-worker's houses split into flats and converted into restaurants.
